Paul Parker

Thanks to Jannette and Judy for letting me know about of this website and to Gordon for posting my stuff.  Great idea to stay in touch with some of the greatest coworkers I have ever known!

We are going on our 14th year here in the Dallas area.  I am still with the Power Systems group in Mesquite.  We came down here February 1994 first to AT&T, which became Lucent, then Tyco Power Systems (2001) and effective today, Lineage Power (private equity new owner – Gores Group).

I’m still doing reliability and failure analysis work.  You would think after 30 years of doing this we would have figured out how to make stuff stop breaking!

Power Systems has served as a magnet for former TTY LR folks.  We still have at least nine of us who have survived all of the changes over the years while maintaining our effective years of service (30 for me as of August this year).  Hopefully under Gores we will make it a few more years.

Mary Kay and I celebrated out 30th anniversary last June.  Meredith (age 26) graduated from Texas A&M in 2004 and is now working in Dallas and will be getting married next May.  Laura (age 21) graduated last May from Lon Morris with a 2 year associates degree and is now living at home attending Richland College and working at Petsmart.

I’m still backpacking every year with some old (I mean that literally) fiends from Lucent
days in Paul Parker & daughter Meredith, Grand Canyon, Sept. 2007New Jersey.  Meredith and I went backpacking in the Grand Canyon in September, my 11th trip there with more to come!  I’m hoping to retire in the next few years to take on some long distance hiking.  I’m always looking for new hiking partners if anyone is interested.

This year I’ve become the poster child for men over 50 to get regular Prostate checkups.  I was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer last May during my annual physical. I had surgery in Chicago September 25 with a favorable outcome (95% chance of full cure).  So for all of you guys out there, and I know most of you are at least 50 or getting close, get your annual physical exams.  If any of you get the news I got, contact me and I will be happy to walk you thorough the maze of choices you have.

It’s been great hearing from old friends.  I hope everyone is forwarding news of this website to other TTYLR friends.

  1. Paul,

It’s good to have news from you.

You are the very picture of health! One would never guess that you are battling the big “C.” Walter and I wish you all the best for a big win in the long term.

In our healthier days, Walter and I enjoyed walking short trails, but nothing like what you are doing. Sounds like great fun–except for lugging those heavy backpacks around….

    Hugs to you,

    Jannette

  2. Great to hear that you are doing good. Do you still work as long and hard as you did when you were doing the Reliability Testing
and failure analysis LR? I don’t think I would have recognized you in the picture if I had not know it was you. My how time has flown passed us.

    Take Care,
    Evie

  3. Hey, time certainly does fly, doesn’t it? Great to get the update and to know that you are doing as well as you are. Prayers that the 95% includes you and that you continue in the good health to take those long hikes.

    Take care,

    Lynn

  4. Well, Paul, you can hike the Grand Canyon all you want. Sitting in front of El Tovar is more my speed!
It’s great to hear from you … I remember Mary Kay from Pulaski Heights Junior High, and I remember you from the Hendrix College physics department. Truthfully, I can say I’ve forgotten more about physics than most people know. Maybe your retention has been a little better over the years.
I really hated to hear about your cancer. Breast cancer knocked me off my feet over seven years ago (when my son was 3 1/2 years old). I really like probability and statistics, but not when dealing with our own mortality. Really, some of the best words you’ll ever hear are, “You’re doing just fine … it looks like you’ve beaten this thing.” Our prayers are that you’ll hear these words soon!

  5. Paul,

My son still mentions you from time to time. He was so impressed that there was an adult who loved snakes.

Of course I remember that I was swimming in Lake Ouachita when you mentioned something about the lake being full of water snakes. I couldn’t get out of there fast enough!

    Best,
    Margit

  6. Hi Paul,
I had wondered where you ended up after leaving LR. I am not surprised you are still doing reliabilty work as you seemed to enjoy the challenge! I remember those chambers that would stress the circuit cards with heat and cold.

  7. Paul,

I have some reliability questions for you. What is your current email address?

    Thanks
    Margit

  8. PS – my email address is margit.elo@panavision.com
